Beagle Pitbull Mix – Is This Cross Right For You?

Beagle is brilliant, and Pitbulls are rough and super loyal. So when these two breeds crossbreed, they end up making a new superior breed of dogs that contains the best of both worlds. This wonderful breed is very new to our world and culture. Very little about its health situation is also know to veterinarians. As such, we are determined to inform you about this dog with as much information as possible.

The most significant advantage of having A beagle Pitbull mix is that it has the temperament and the supreme affectionate nature of these two dogs. Kids, especially girls, love these bundles of happiness. They are very compatible with most families, which is the driving factor for their popularity.

Dog Breed Mix

Before we delve into what a pit-bull and Beagle mix is. We need to learn what are dog mixes and how are their existence as mix-breeds affect their breed status.

Dogs can usually interbreed between different breeds of dogs. The success rate of breeding is not always the highest, but they are often more successful than other animals. Dog mixes have various reasons they exist.

Purebred dogs are pure only if both of the parents are purebred dogs themselves and also have a long lineage of a pure bloodline. Mixed-breeds, on the other hand, is any dog breed that is from ordinary non-purebred dogs.

Purebred Dogs

Ever wonder what was the huge hubbub about purebreds and mutts. Well, as we have expressed before, purebred dogs have parents which show specific characteristics. And a huge advantage of that is that you can have some expectations about its temper, body features like muscles or coat, and also the health.

This is extremely important, as this can determine the future of a puppy’s life, and unknown variables can have a huge price to pay to contend with.

Crosses between purebred dogs have more or less consistency between generations of dogs. This consistency is unavailable for mixed-breed or mutts.

Reputable breeders and shelters are a great starting place to find purebred dogs. The price might be steep, but more reputable options are ethical and don’t neglect animal right like unknown or fishy breeders. Animal League often has purebred puppies for adoption; they are well trusted.

Pet stores and internet puppy sellers are very irresponsible and have inhumane methods to raise the puppies, like puppy mills. This is horrible and they should not be supported by purchasing from them.

Mixed-breed

Mixed-breed (mutts) is a mix between breeds, that have been bred in the wild without any human interference. They can’t be two purebred dogs breeding to be a mixed breed dog. These are usually not accepted as pure or have pedigree.

These dogs don’t usually have consistent characteristics as a well-raised purebred dog. And its life expectancy can vary a lot, as well as its temperament. Which makes many of its drawbacks and ultimately is valued less than purebred dogs.

Crossbreed

Crossbreed/Designer dogs are born from two or more known and recognized purebred dogs. They are not breeds themselves necessarily or can’t effectively breed and pass the same gene structure as themselves to be called a proper breed.

Beagle

Beagles are a miniature version of large Foxhounds. They are raised to be detective scent hounds to hunt hares. Their abilities are used in modern times to find illegal goods and products that are bought in quarantine around the world. The Beagle we see now has been developed as a fashion trend as far as the 1830s. And the origins date back to England in the early 11th century and even 55 B.C. But their usefulness was overwritten by foxhounds and they became the standard for hunting game. The beagles then were introduced to America and became the 6th most popular dog breed there.

Beagles are known to be very intelligent and cool-headed. They also don’t have many of the genetic diseases, unlike many other pure breeds.

Pitbull Terrier

Pit-bull terrier has ancestors linking Bulldogs and Terriers, which makes them chunky and strong. They were first used as the notorious blood sport dogs in England. They were put into pits of hundreds of mice and rats from which they got the name ‘pit’. Which they would compete to kill the most amount of these poor creatures to win. The puppies were bred to be fighters through and through, which gave them the name bull terriers.

They were known as very violent because of these sports whilst fighting the other dogs. But unbeknownst to most of these dogs were one of the most loving dogs to their owners outside of the ring. After outlawing these cruel and unethical games, they became immensely popular as people’s companions around the western and European communities.

They are mainly used as guard dogs. They are also used as police, search, and rescue dogs. Pit-bulls have short fuses sometimes, but they are docile unless provoked. The lesser-known fact among the general populace is they are adorable as the sweetest honey out there. So they are hit or miss in terms of guarding.

Pit bulls often have health issues. The most notable are skin problems and hip dysplasia.

Beagle and Pitbull mix

Pitbull Beagle mix aka Beagbull is a dog that is accepted as a pure breed by the American Kennel Club surprisingly, which is kind of rare for a cross between purebred dogs.

This dog is a medium dog breed which is considered as a designer dog. Beagle, Pit-bull mix is immensely popular with dog owners. They have various names, but these all depend on the parents they have and how much of one type of breed they got more than the other in their genes. They are a new breed comparatively, being introduced very recently in fact. They are being bred in troves around the world.

This dog is very obscure in terms of documentation about its origins. But it still snugs its way in families as one of the friendliest loving companions out there. They like to play a lot and are very skittish. Although this all depends on how the parents are in their temperament. They can be very non caring to over caring. The variety in their temperament still has some averages we can look at.

Body stature

Most of the beagle pitbull mix is a medium-sized dog. They can be between 20 to 10 inches in length and can weigh up to 40 pounds. Both males and females have similar sizes and weights. They are unlike their parents in size and structure due to being a product of different breeds. And the muscles are always indicative of their genes leaning to the Pitbull terrier side.

Puppies can have droopy skin like pit bulls and as they often grow up, they tend to grow into their skins with extra muscle size. They have ears that fold down like beagle ears. All of this varies between the puppies in the same litter.

Coats

These dogs stem from breeds that don’t have long hair, to begin with. So they will often have double-layered shiny and small coats of beagles and Pit bull’s colored patches of hair. Their colors are different, based on the parents, but pink, white, brown, black, among a few other obscure coat colors. They might also exhibit some of the Pitbull like skin color difference on their face.

Temperament

These dogs are super energetic, fun, and loving from the beagle side and intelligent, coolheaded, and well behaved from the Pitbull side. They often go about snuggling with their owners and always finding a way to jump in their laps. Because of the extra energy they carry, they tend to be mischievous. Biting on objects and poking holes on soft plastic stuff are nothing out of its power. Still, it makes a very funny and joyful dog. They can’t contain the amount of energy they have and run around the house at times till their fuel is depleted.

They have extreme stubbornness, are wild in temperament for barking and howling. They like to be dramatic and show they don’t want to listen to your orders. They also have deep separation anxiety problems. They rather pull your pant and rip it off before letting you go out to work. They will do their best to keep your attention and play around with you.

Their separation anxiety is even worse if you end up staying away from home. They will bark at neighbors and also attempt to assault your furniture and destroy them to cope with their boredom. This is very destructive, so think about getting another breed if you stay out often.

They also will bark at anything and everything they feel curiosity towards. This can be extremely annoying for the neighbors.

Do note, that these temperaments and behavior changes depending on the puppy.

These dogs are super caring and intelligent. They will be the first to look out for you when you are feeling down. They have this “I’m here for you, always” attitude. On your most downtimes, they can cheer you up. They are very good for emotional support. And they often have a dependency on you to give them time.

If bulldogs are super guard dogs, then beagles are horrible guard dogs. The Beagle Pitbull is also not the best guard dog to have. They will be the first to go and play around the intruder, instead of barking and shooing them away.

Training

They are hulking and a bit mischievous. So training them can be a great workout. They need a lot of care and diligence towards them. They need daily schooling and a great routine to make it a habit and the habit will, in turn, become understanding.

The best time to start training is when the dog is as young as possible. This can make it absorb all the training much more instinctively as opposed to if it became an adult. They can tend to run and get lost. So try to have it on leashes and make a fenced area for it to know the grounds it will live on.

They are a bit tougher to train, but with enough time and patience, they can be trained easily. If they are not trained well they can have outbursts and get confused when situations go out of hand.

Exercise

Beagle and Pit bull’s mix has too much excess energy. They will need to be taken to walks every day and often play around in parks and playgrounds to keep their energy reserves low. They need around and over 12 miles of walking every week or so to stay fit and also keep you in shape. For the puppies walking and playing 1 to 2 hours every day is more than enough.

They also need some sorts of mental exercises which will help them have a good cognitive ability to rely on. They are not allowed to be “unleashed”, meaning don’t take off those leashes unless you want to say permanent goodbyes to the dog.

Their exercise needs to be around 40 to 60 minutes every day. They have this thing for sniffing around. So if you take them for walks into a floral area or a place with vegetation, this can help them drain the sniffing habit from their system till another day.

Bribing them with snacks can be helpful, but that defeats their work out anyways. Since they are gaining excess fat and calories from the snack and that just gets canceled out from their exercise. So the overall effect is nothing more than taking them to play outside and not getting any other benefits

Living Needs

Unlike what you might think Beagle and pit bull are very easygoing to adapt to their surroundings. They fit in any normal-sized apartment well. They will also need to go to exercise more. Their toilet breaks need to be arranged so that you don’t need to go out too often but do take care of their needs without second thoughts.

They behave well for the most part, and they can be the friendliest for the children at home. They always have a caring attitude towards children and can be trusted with them around. The biggest drawback is however if they didn’t get the ability to socialize when younger they will be less inclined to be calm around other dogs.

Health-related Issues

These dogs can be stronger than the parents. Yet still, they can inherit issues from them whether genetically or the normal issues related to every dog.

They live an average lifespan of 13 to 15 years. This is a normal length of lifespan for dogs in general. Methods testing for their health conditions is relatively unknown to us. Further testing and medicine are also limited due to their recent appearance. So the first thing to look out for is the parent’s health. These dogs exhibit the same diseases and illnesses that the parents have on average.

Bone and skin are very high on the list of diseases that affects them. Heart problems, hip dysplasia, skin issues, eye issues, dental issues among a lot more piling up as they grow older.

Their elbow and hip issues cause arthritis down the road, which can impede their movement and cause severe pain.

They can also get Musladin-Leuke syndrome, which causes their skins to tighten extremely as they grow older. They also can get allergies like Pitbull, as this is one of the biggest health concerns to have for a Pitbull.

Taking them to a vet is a must every few months for routine check-ups.

Nutrition

They need no more than 2 cups of food per day to not over energize them. Puppies and pregnant dogs have different daily recommendations.

Their foods need to cope with their high energy. This avoids them from being very frail and weak all day. Snacks should be controlled because they tend to get obese without proper diet control. 10 pieces of snacks that are small is ok, but less is recommended. The food intake needs to be very closely observed and well planned at the same time.

Grooming

These dogs have small hair and need little grooming like brushing every week or so. Their bathing needs to be once every two months and don’t require additional requirements. As for more allergy problems in their skin, they need different methods to take care of their needs. Their ears need to be cleaned every week or so to avoid dirt and grime piling up.

You need to be careful of any tick infestation, these can cause your dogs a lot of grief. And if they get too dirty a shower is a must. Their nails and teeth can be taken care of like most medium-sized dogs.

Buying/Adopting a Beagle Pitbull

Buying a proper Beagle Pitbull is easier said than done. They are very rare and finding them is a story on itself. The puppies either are not true Beagle Pitbull mix or they are bought up by unethical means. The most proper ways are to find the groups in social media that have intensive information about these dogs. And the very dog loving groups locally or internationally are also recommended.

Using reviews these days is very iffy since most companies that are not legit end up faking the reviews. Using past customer experience is the way to go. The best reputable breeders often have them low in numbers. So getting them is like going to war with 10 other families who want to have the puppies. Always get the once that suits your criteria and their temperament can be deduced with a few experienced eyes is the best option.

For half a grand you can expect to buy a puppy from reputable breeders. Be wary of unethical breeders and always say no to them.

Animal shelters also have some Beagle Pitbull mix on rare occasions. So if you want to adopt them, consider that training them properly is very hard as they grew up either alone or got abandoned. They can be rescued off the streets too. By doing so, you are not only saving money, but you are also saving a dog’s life and making it better.

Beagle Pitbull for Families

Beagle Pitbull are amazing dogs to have for families. They are always well-loved by children because of their jolly and affectionate characteristics. They can be left with the children since they get along with them and if they are trained enough, they can bring them toys and other things to play with. Be on the lookout from time to time or have a baby camera on hand just to be safe. They prefer your company the most, so keeping them is like having a companion by your side always.

The more active and stay at home families are best suited for this dog. Because they have separation anxiety. They prefer exercising over lazing around, so they can force you to fix your workout routine if you are slouching.

They are noisy and spry; patience should be one of your strong suits. They also need a lot of dedication to train them properly. With enough socializing training, they can get along with other pets, but that’s an uphill battle at times if they are on the older side.

To Conclude

They can be a bit needier and prone to be endangered, they are also expensive. Still, the beagle pit-bull mix is a great choice for a family pet because of their caring nature. Be patient towards them and be considerate. Don’t buy them as a guard dog, unless you want to be ransacked by thieves. Always remember to have fun with them.
